Challenge

Special Olympics of North Carolina (SONC) approached E-dreamz about redesigning their existing website with a visually-appealing, contemporary design that is consistent with the organization’s vision and messaging. Content and functionality would need to be categorized by specific audience segments and allow non-technical SONC managers to update content and images as needed. Most importantly, the site needed to solve usability problems while focusing on local events, encourage donations, volunteer and coach registrations, and display visually engaging photo images of athletes.

Solution

To illustrate SONC’s mission of providing year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, North Carolina and individual local events calendars and news sections were created. These calendars allow users to view a consolidated list of upcoming state-wide events or narrow events to the county or even zip code level. The home page prominently highlights the Athlete Oath, athlete photos, event photo galleries, select events and areas created for athletes, volunteers, coaches, donors and family & friends. A robust content management system allows SONC to add events, content and images on the fly. Area managers are able to update their own local programs and information, meaning the site stays current across the state.

Result

The dynamic calendar allows users to effortlessly view events across the state and displays results in their area by zip code or county. Audience specific content makes it easier for visitors to find exactly the information they need and, due to the simple to use content management system, news is kept fresh for repeat visitors. Additionally, Emailz Direct was implemented to improve communication with these visitors. A secure store offers SONC apparel for sale and online registration forms easily allow site visitors to volunteer. All areas of the site advance the common theme of communicating the SONC message, providing user specific content and promoting current state and local events.
