Similarities Between Twitter and Inbound Linking Strategies
Inbound Linking , Internet Marketing , Social Media Marketing , Twitter Add commentsHave you noticed the similarities between Twitter and Inbound Linking strategies? Some people focus on quantity over quality. If your goal for joining Twitter is to get as many followers as possible you are missing the real value of Twitter.
There are many gimmicks for building inbound links into your website, but the most valuable inbound links are still people naturally linking to you because your website provides true value. Many people do not focus on building value into their website instead they try to get as many links as possible from Directories and unrelated websites.
Will they be able to get a lot of links? Yes. Will those links be valuable? Maybe, maybe not. These links probably won’t pass much link juice to help with your Internet Marketing initiatives. The visitors that come from those sites probably won’t be very valuable either if the topics of these sites are not related at all to your industry.
The same can be true for Twitter. The best followers are those who are following you because they feel that you provide valuable information . They value what you are saying and will pay attention when you say something.
If you are focused on building in as many followers as possible, some will be quality but many will be people who are not interested in related topics and are just following in hopes of building in more followers for themselves. Since these people also only care about getting followers they will not pay attention to what you are saying.
Would you rather have a large number of followers who do not really review what you are posting or would you rather have fewer followers who value what you post and tell others about your value?
I know that I choose to follow people that I can learn from. If you post all day introducing yourself to people and asking them to follow you I will not want to follow you.
Others have chosen to automatically follow anyone who follows them. I can see some value here, but it also seems similar to reciprocal linking which used to be a very popular inbound linking strategy – Link to me and I will link to you. On Twitter it is follow me and I will follow you.
Another Inbound Linking strategy is to pay for inbound links. Keep an eye out for more people paying influential Twitter users to follow them. People will be willing to pay for followers that can RT their message or make recommendations.
If you are actively trying to increase your followers make sure you do not get caught up in getting as many followers as possible. Concentrate on providing value to others and engaging with a captivated audience.

Aug 17, 2009 at 1:05 PM Very interesting and informative article. I've noticed that many of the above mentioned are true. I find that building relationships with people on Twitter or any other social network are very important. It truly is a quality over quantity concept.
I do have one question, though. For people that post on Twitter from say... TweetDeck, you'll see at the bottom of the tweet "Submitted via TweetDeck" How does that help or assist with inbound linking, if at all? I would think that it would significantly help TweetDeck when it comes to search results, and not because of the unique name.
Thanks again for the insightful post.
Oct 3, 2009 at 5:29 PM Very good and valid points about twitter. Twitter has its advantages but we've had better results with content based SEO. Still use Twitter though and will keep in mind your suggestions. Looks like from your comments that I better go buy some Ugg boots...lol.
