Just for fun I ran some numbers from our favorite browser statistic site. www.w3schools.com
Here is what I found, now I admit this is only from one source, and I admit they are just statistics and you can usually bend those however you want but it does raise some questions.
According to the numbers from w3schools it looks like Internet Explorer or "IE" even with three versions of it being counted (IE6,IE7, and IE8) no longer has top billing for percentage of market share for browsers. Thats huge!!
They have stats all the way back to 2002 and IE no matter if you added up all the other browsers always had at least 50% of the market. According to the data they are providing this was true until February of this year.
With Firefox working hard on new updates (they just released version 3.5) with chrome holding more of the market than expected (many thought the numbers would go down after first release). Firefox and Chrome have been quietly and quickly gaining ground and by these stats seem to have finally moved in front of the big bad IE.
Don't get me wrong I'm not by anyway suggesting that IE is dead or that it's still not close. Firefox alone has the advantage at 47.7% to IE's 42.6%. With Firefox and Google Chrome together the total market share goes up to 53.2% . Add in Opera's steady 2.2% and Safari's steady 3% and suddenly your looking at 58.4% to 42.6% split with the majority not being Microsoft's IE.
Again not to say the sky is falling or that the earth is about to be hit by a comet and we will all die, just saying that after 8 years of this site keeping stats and IE always being top dog there seems to be a “new sheriff in town” and his name is not Reggie Hammond it's Firefox.
If you don't get the last line then you were not a fan of the 48hr movies in the 80's with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte.
Have a happy 4th everyone.

IE seems to keep an advantage with business users all through the Firefox, Chrome and Open Source flare-ups!
