Welcome to the first Design Ninja blog post. This is number one of a series of Design aimed blog posts so get your Pixel Katana’s ready because it’s game time. Today’s topic, Fonts of Fury!
As Design Ninja we are experts in the art of Photoshop-fu but one of our greatest weapons is our ever growing collection of fonts. A font helps set the mood of a site. It picks up where the layout leaves off. In the recent years Design Ninja around the world have been getting bolder (no pun intended) with their use of fonts. We use it to help further a theme and sometimes we even use it as the layout itself. That said there are some things to keep mind my fellow Ninja.
The font is meant to compliment the design. In other words if your site says “Cowboy Ranch” don’t choose a font that yells “Disco Dancing”. The lines of your font choice should go hand in hand with the lines of the graphics on the page. San-Serif fonts can often be seen as modern due to their often straight lines and slight curves, as Serif fonts can be seen as royal or formal due to their “column-like” lettering. Cursive fonts are often used for very formal and decorative themes and often carry a sense of personalization. Cursive fonts that seem handwritten can serve as a reflection of the client as it comes off as more personal and self-defining. Be cautious my Design Ninja, choosing a font must be thought of as equally as every other element of your layout. It can make or break your design.
Choosing your font can be tedious. Surfing through hundreds of fonts just to find the right one can take a lot of time and finding a secondary can be even more difficult but trust that it will be time well spent. As an experienced Design Ninja I generally use no more than 3 fonts on a design often sticking with 2. But on the other end of the spectrum are Design Ninja that have the expert ability to throw in numerous fonts and still achieve a clean, easy to navigate layout. I call these Ninja the Radicals!
Radicals create designs through chaos or so it would seem. They have the ability to fill the entire layout with fonts of different colors, shapes, and sizes and still accomplish a more than successful design. We are fortunate to have such a Radical on our team. Her designs make great use of different fonts throughout the entire site without feeling like a font overload.
As Design Ninja the best is always expected of us. Our Pixel Katana’s will cut through mediocre design trends and unleash new levels of design and creativity. With our Fonts of Fury by our side, we will ring in a new era of font based layouts. Fearlessly we will cut through the forests of Arial, Time New Roman, and Comic Sans to a bright new world of limitless possibilities…as Design Ninja!
