As designers we are challenged with delivering creative and unique ideas on a constant and sometimes hectic timeline. We have to "Switch On" the creativity at a moment's notice, after all, you can't really explain design block to a client. So the question is, when you find yourself in that moment of "blah" while staring at the always intimidating blank stage, how do you get the creativity flowing? How do you switch on your design mojo? How do you unleash the creativity?
I have heard it told that for some it's caffeine, others need to walk around. Some need to sketch on paper while others need to look up other sites to get ideas. The most common one I have seen though is music. That's my muse. When the time comes to let the creativity fill the screen it's time for the headphones to come on and the music to start blasting.
It is very interesting to see how the music effects my design. When we designed the Pat Rogers Speedway website, my playlist was set to Rock and Roll and 50's Rockabilly. It helps set the tone. You see when I am designing a site, I want to connect with the users. I want them to see what I see when interacting with the site. I want to hear the music. Other designs require different music. My design playlists have such a wide variety of genres which include Rock, Electronica, Hip-Hop, Oldies, and even classical music. Nocturne in B Flat Minor by Fryderyk Chopin has definitely inspired some recent designs. Music helps the inner Design Ninja to slash through my Photoshop file with its Pixel Katana.
I put the question you. What helps unleash your Design Ninja? What inspires you to unleash awesomeness upon your design?
