One of the most powerful features of Twitter is the real-time experience. The growing popularity of Twitter and the demand for real-time results have made Bing and Google take notice. Both search engines now integrate real-time tweets in their results.

Bing
Bing shows real-time tweets for all keywords as well as a keyword cloud that displays the hottest topics on Twitter. Check out Bing Twitter Real-Time Results

Google
Google announced this week their own real-time Twitter results. At this point Google will only show results for the most popular Twitter topics. When you search for a popular topic you will notice the results appearing halfway down the page. Check out Google Twitter Real-Time Results

So What Does this Mean?
People now use Twitter as a search engine. Instead of doing searches on Bing and Google many will just ask friends and respected experts questions on Twitter. There are obvious benefits to adding these real-time tweets into search engine results but there are drawbacks too.

A goal for SEO is to get first page search engine results for extremely competitive keywords in order to increase website traffic and leads. With these real-time Twitter results it is possible to get on the first page, but only for a brief moment. I can't wait until I start to hear agencies claiming "Guaranteed First Page Results" just like many currently boast by using Pay Per Click advertising. I also expect to see a lot more Twitter spam for popular keywords. You may only see results for a moment, but how long until someone posts all day long to keep appearing on the first page?
